Dutch ISP, acquired by France Telecom in 1998, manages a national network with 26 POPs in the Netherlands, as well as an international backbone, with POPs in London, Brussels, Paris, Frankfurt, Washington and San Jose.

1996–1999 France Telecom Interactive (FTI), Paris, France

A division of France Telecom that operates "Wanadoo", the premier Internet Service Provider in France and second-largest in Europe (over 560.000 dialup, cable and ADSL subscribers as of 2/1/99 when I left the company, over 3 million now).

Deputy to the Vice-President of Engineering. Acting as Chief Technology Officer for the division.

Achievements include:

  • defining and implementing an architecture capable of scaling to an estimated 1 million subscribers in 1999. This includes the network architecture, the services platform (Web servers for our portal site, email…), the Business Support System (provisioning and billing, as the Engineering Department handles corporate IT development work), the Customer Care management system and the Operations Support System. The first phase was completed in August 97, the second in February 99)

  • setting up Quality Assurance procedures, including testing, to improve quality of service.

  • establishing formal project management, with an emphasis towards training the project managers.

  • setting up a project group to support Marketing in product definition and conduct technical and cost impact studies earlier in the product cycle.

The project was successfully completed, on time (3 months) and within budget, in collaboration with Netscape Communications, with a total budget of $750.000 and a staff of 15 engineers.
